    http://home.arcor.de/kassandro/Tippspiel/Derby.xls

    Herne-Eickel

The next day (like most Mondays) Gereon got up at 4:30 and left the family home at 5:00 – business casual. Not that he had to be at his part-time office on a particular hour but by leaving that early, he avoided most of the rush-our traffic. More to the point, it also gave him a chance to stop by at the training stable before 9, spend some time watching his horse at work, have a coffee and some discussion with Fanselow (who was rarely ever willing to discuss anything in any satisfactory depth) before driving the final 45 minutes of his weekly 4-hour journey after the peak of the rush-hour.

One of the more agreeable features of the Saab, which was heavy, safe, and comfortable but definitely a bit under-powered even compared to Susanne’s very modest 2-seater, was the sound system. Thus he would often spend the better part of the 4-hour-drive, in particular the early hours, listening to the music from his past while floating with the early morning traffic. Today he had brought a CD by John Mayall. The first track, ‘The Laws Must Change’ was taking a stand for the legalization of cannabis, “It seems to be in a fashion to say you’re right and you are wrong”, but also against undue revolutionary actions “Don’t’throw rocks at policemen” - pretty much in-line with Gereon’s own attitude.

The second track ‘Saw Mill Gulch Road’ started just when the sun came up behind the impressive scenery of the Container Terminal. It was a rather melancholic song and it kept reminding him on Christina, the girl he had left in favour of Susanne some 20 years ago. She really was a girl back then, about 10 years his junior. It was the evening before his 30st birthday and they had ended-up in the Intemezzo, a stylish cocktail bar with a small group of friends. There had been some minor quarrel between Christina and him and afterwards she had preferred to engage in boring discussions with some other people. When midnight approached, he had already found the company of Susanne and somehow she had learned that his birthday was coming up and ordered a bottle of Ca’ del Bosco Franciacorta Pinot Brut which the two of them happily emptied while Christina was still unaware of the situation. When Christina and the other friends finally remembered the occasion, Susanne had already ordered a taxi and the two of them went without much noise. “She couldn’t see - me ride away – and leave her behind – so all alone.”

Somehow the night with Susanne, the breakfast the next morning with Susanne and Holger in the modest but stylish terraced house that they still inhabited to date, and Susanne’s easy going attitude had convinced him, that at 30 he could just as well fall in love with a woman of 35 than with a girl of 20. He went back to his own place only 2 days later, found a few tearful calls from Christina on his answering machine but when he tried to call back, she would not talk to him and that was that.

The next track started, when he had already taken the turn towards Bremen – the traffic was exceptionally light today. ‘I’m Gonna Fight for you JB’, a tribute to J. B. Lenoir, a bluesman who had ended up in prison for his opposition to Eisenhower and the Korean War. Gereon ever wondered, what kind of guy the singer was. His distinctive high voice was almost annoying but touching at the same time. For all one knew, he had himself dutifully served in Korea and afterwards grown long hair moved to a tree house in Laurel Canyon, California and became part of the aftermath of flower power.

When he left the A1 autobahn at Dortmund a little more than 3 hours later, Gereon decided that he would not visit the stable today. He had seen Double Trouble yesterday, he would probably not do any work the day after the race and Fanselow was not in anyway, as he would stay at the Derby Meeting for the entire week. Instead he grabbed a coffee at a gas station and went on (now in heavy rush-hour traffic) to arrive at his office in Herne-Eickel about 20 past 9. The part-time secretary he kept was not yet in and the phone was ringing as he entered. Although he did not expect any important calls and would have preferred a few minutes with another coffee and todays newspaper, he lifted the receiver. It was Salzsieder, the owner of the horse that won Double Trouble’s race the day before. Gereon had not spoken to Salzsieder very often he was really just another acquaintance from the race track and from the occasional owner’s event he had attended. Nevertheless, he could immediately sense the urgency in his voice.

Herbert (or 'Bert' as most people called him) Salzsieder explained that he had looked-up the Ophtex GmbH because he new that Sahm had become managing director of that company some time ago. Ophtex GmbH was the German subsidary and operational branch of the US-based Ophtex International Corporation. Ophtex Corp (OPHT) were the junk bonds which Helmut Kohl had sold to Sahm and quite a few other racehorse owners in Germany. After the stock had lost more than 95% of its original value, Sahm had become the speaker of a group of shareholders, then member of the supervisory board and finally managing director of the operative branch.

Salzsieder explained that his call was neither about yesterday's race (yes, he knew that his horse had slightly stiffled Double Trouble in the final turn and he was in fact happy that Sahm had not called on the stewards). It was also not about Ophtex (which Salzsieder also held some shares in). The matter was more urgent and more delicate and when Salzsieder found that he had no one to turn to, Gereon Sahm had come to his mind.

It looked like his sister Cindy had been abducted. Cindy had joined him at the races and he had been very happy to have a winner so she could join him also on the podium. Then, after the ceremony she had suddenly vanished which Salzsieder found strange but not alarming. He had been looking around for her and after the last race he had been waiting at his car until the owner's parking lot was empty. He had tried to call her at home and on her mobile without success. On his way home he had stopped by at her flat in Lüneburg where she was working as a pharmacist – no one answered the door. He had not sleped very well and started calling the pharmacy at 8. They had a tape anouncing the opening hours and when he finally reached someone at 8:30, he learned that Cindy had not yet arrived and yes, she would normally turn up before 8:30 but certainly she might have been held up. He had called back two more times but Cindy was still not in and he urged the person he talked to to tell Cindy to call when she turned up. Then around nine a shoe-box-sized parcel was delivered. Salzsieder could not identify the sender (there was a stamp of some company he did not know on the sticker) and he did not expect a parcel but he did open it. It was indeed a shoe box and it contained a pair of ladies shoes. The shoes were in good condition but obviously not new. Salzsieder believed (but he was by no means sure) that it were Cindy's, the pair she had worn yesterday. There was nothing else to be found in the parcel.

    Dick Francis (Dienstag, 21 August 2012 18:10)

Gereon’s first reaction was to suggest the obvious: calling the police. This was clearly no longer a case for ‘missing persons’. The strange posting he had found in the Turf-Forum yesterday struck him, had Salzsieder seen it? No, he did not read the Turf-Forum he didn’t even have an account, he was not a man of the Internet. One of the reasons he had decided to call Sahm was indeed that Sahm was known to be a prolific contributor to some internet forums – maybe he could help researching the background of this nightmare. The other reason was more personal, Sahm was somehow different which made him rather more trustworthy than less in Salzsieder’s situation – he would not go into any details here. Last not least he believed he could get through to Sahm rather quickly and convince him to look into this matter.

Salzsieder would definitely not call the police, not at this point, not before he had an idea what sort of ambush this assault originated from. Gereon, while still on the phone with Salzsieder, had started his Laptop, plugged in the network cable (no WLAN meant less security concerns) and logged-on to the Turf Forum. The thread opened by ‘Gockel’ yesterday had indeed continued:

Superman (status: champion jockey, Sunday 24.06.07, 21:38)
Another winner sold by GBS! Congratulations to Bert Salzsieder jockey Nikita Pawlow and trainer Christian Lindt!

Black Major (status: champion jockey, Sunday 24.06.07, 22:03)
Kohl is beating the drum again – could we please stop this?

    Gurba (status: jockey, 24.06.07, 22:19)
Did anyone watch the video? Did anyone notice Pawlow’s excessive use of the whip? Also he has stifled Double Trouble at the exit of the last turn.

Wizzard (status: champion jockey, 24.06.07, 22:24)
Crybaby – did you call the police?

Superman (status: champion jockey, Monday 25.06.07, 00:12)
@Black Major: F… off and mind your own business!

Renate (status: admin, Monday 25.06.07, 07:35)
Stop the fuss and don’t use strong language, otherwise I will close this thread!

Gockel (status: amateur, Monday 25.06.07, 09:03)
    Salzsieder:
Hopefully you are satisfied with the delivery. Sleeping beauty has cold feet. Please find a pair of closed pumps from her collection, no peeptoes, no sandals. Pack it, using the box you received this morning. Be on your way to Hannover. There is an internet café on Goethestr. 9. Check for further delivery instructions from that café at 1:00 p.m.!

    Dick Francis (Dienstag, 21 August 2012 18:11)

Gereon had read the messages to Salzsieder and and double-checked his perception of the authors while reading. ‘Superman’ was Kohl as a matter of fact. He skipped no opportunity to advertise his questionable services for free. Interstingly Salzsieder had bought a horse from him despite the Ophtex experience. ‘Black major’ was also a known character although Gereon did not know his real name. Probably a small owner or breeder, maybe he should look up a horse called Black Major. People used either the names well-known top-performers of their own horses as nicks. He had never heard about a horse called Black Major. ‘Black Major’ was often lecturing on breeding issues and he did not like ‘Superman’. ‘Gurba’ was a female rider and a failure at that in Gereon’s judgement. She posted under her real name (Annette Gurba) and tried to make up for her modest riding skills by regularly lecturing on animal rights issues and assessing her colleagues’ performance. ‘Wizzard’ was a very reasonable poster whose true identity was unknown to Gereon. ‘Renate’ (Renate Albrecht) was the founder Turf Forum.

Gockel’s instructions were reasonably clear although it was not quite clear why he would take the risk of another handover of something as unimportant (seemingly) as a pair of shoes. There was not much to be learned about Gockel’s identity. It seemed reasonable to assume that just like Gereon when watching the Salzsieders on the podium, ‘Gockel’ was under the impression to be dealing with Bert Salzsieder’s Wife rather than his sister. His twin-sister as Gereon had learned whom Bert seemed to be very close with. Would he be in a position to retrieve a suitable pair of Cindy’s shoes from her apartment? Well, yes. Even better, he might find one in his own place. Would he be in a position to drive to drive to Hannover (or even better take a train as the internet café ‘Gockel’ had ordered him to was not too far from the central station)? Yes he would. Would he be able to retrieve the additional delivery instructions from ‘Gockel’ when he arrived? Well, there was a number of obstacles: Renate had recently changed the rules of her forum such that most sections could only be read by registered users. Bert Salzsieder was not registered and it typically took some hours, maybe a day until a new account was enabled. It was also necessary to have an email account. Salzsieder did have one but he used it only for business purposes through his secretary who also knew the account details including password. Would he then be able to find and navigate the Turf Forum? Well maybe.

From a practical point of view it was ruled-out to have Salzsieder receive his instructions directly from the Internet. It was either the secretary (whom Salzsieder would not want to involve) or Gereon who would have to retrieve and pass the instructions to Salzsieders mobile phone. It was ten o’ clock now. Salzsieder would need roughly 2 hours to safely reach the internet café via train. He might have to take the car in case he did not find a pair of suitable shoes in his place and therefore needed to stop by at his sister’s flat. They exchanged their mobile numbers and agreed to get in touch again by 12:30 before Salzsieder approached the internet café on Goethestraße. Meanwhile Gereon would cancel today’s meetings and give the matter some more thought. They might have some more discussion on the phone when necessary.

    Dream well (Dienstag, 21 August 2012 19:28)

he would often sit at the window later in the afternoon, when he brought Fujiyama Crest home ever so swiftly, the most delicate and final ride of all the seven that sublime day, the day that brought to the world of racing a new dimension. He would relish the taste of victory for the umptieth time, how Michael Stoute had awaited him in awe in the unsaddling enclosure and hugged him nearly to death, and the grandstand had been rocked and shaken the final furlong up the ascot hill when Fujiyama Crest had almost fallen apart, were it not for his sheer power and will to keep him going and seeing out the heard which was huffin and puffin at his hind quarters. And he recalled how the receptions in the winners enclosure had grown more and more enthusiastic as the drama enfolded in all it`s glory in front of everyone in attendance on that glorious day. What a feat in the saddle, what extraordinary skill and craftmanship at the reigns, he thought, and what shy acknowledgment of his, with only a few subdued tips at the helmet which rightly directed all the praise towards the victorious horses whom he had only guided as a passanger. Sure, there had been some flying dismounts and the had few afterwards in the evening, sure, no doubt deservered, but next morning 5:30 precisely he had shown up at the guv`nors yard to ride his 7 lots as always.

Meanwhile, it had begun to snow, and the evening dark creeped in through the window. Mother cam in "Here`s your milk, Tommy darling, and then it`s bed time!"

    Tante Renate

The secretary, Frau Walter arrived just moments after Gereon had finished the call from Salzsieder as he could see from his glassed office (‘the aquarium’ as he used to call it).

The office was a faceless affair which he had inherited from Kohl who had used it mainly as a call center to solicit investors for Ophtex Corp. Besides Kohl had obviously used the place for various other businesses he ran. When Gereon took over, he had to dispose of hundreds of boxes with advertising materials for mostly useless products and services ranging from anti-rheumatic blankets and pills (purely based on herbal ingredients) enhancing the ‘Spannkraft’ (Virility? Potency? General health? Vitality? Vigour?) of the modern man beyond 50 to advisory services for owners and breeders and on-demand paintings of racehorses from a photograph. There were also a few sizeable plastic horses which he found too ugly to keep and two unpainted jockey statues which he did keep (maybe he could eventually have them painted in his own colours). With Frau Walter and a few students hired through the temp service of Bochum University he had removed the six work places for call-center agents leaving 2 desks (one for Frau Walter and one for a temp) and constructed a large conference table. The aquarium he had left unchanged except for Kohl’s incredibly tasteless executive chair which he replaced with a design classic by Charles Eames.

The paperwork had been a nightmare. It took him about 6 months of work along with Frau Walter to get at least a reasonable overview of what was there and what was missing. Shareholder lists, correspondence, contracts, patents, taxes, balances – there was simply nothing in place. Maybe it had not exactly helped that he had fired Kohl’s secretary and changed the accounting contractor and tax advisor right when he took office. However, a cut had been necessary: “Lieber ein Ende mit Schrecken als Schrecken ohne Ende!“ (better a horrific end than endless horror).

Gereon got up from his Charles Eames chair, went out to Frau Walter (he would normally not call her in, not his style) and asked her to cancel today’s meeting with Professor Wunderlich as well as the phone conference with the patent attorney. There were no urgent matters to discuss so could she please reschedule to next week or later as he had some imminent private problem to attend to. And no, Susanne and the children were o.k., no need to worry. Then he went back to the aquarium, closed the blinds and considered the situation:

It clearly looked like a serious case of abduction. Salzsieder seemed very concerned and at least in this respect he was honest. Salzsieder withheld something, however. Why would he not want the police in? Then, what was the background of the Kidnappers? Was it related to Salzsieder’s job or business (which Gereon knew nothing about)? To his private life (nothing known except for the few bits contributed by Salzsieder this morning)? Was it possibly a hoax arranged by Cindy Salzsieder or her relations? Or was it related to racing? Or to any other aspect of Salzsieder’s or his sister’s life? Or was she just an accidental victim? There was no demand of ransom yet or any other request except for the shoes. Was there anything to be learned from the shoes? Or from the ridiculous nick ‘Gockel’? Apparently, the kidnappers planned to use the Internet, more specifically Tante (aunt) Renate’s Turf Forum as their primary means of communication …

First and foremost, Gereon would have to learn a little more about Salzsieder and his sister. He would spend a little time on the internet to see what he could find. To learn more about the kidnappers, he needed wait for the story to evolve further. It might be worthwile to checkif anything could be provided by the forum administrators. That would , however, require him to call Tante Renate – definitely a less attractive proposition! Would it be an option, to interfere with the kidnapper’s communication through the forum? He remembered some interesting reading he had a while back. The reknown philosopher and communication scientist Paul Watzlawick who had died earlier that year had something to say about the communication with blackmailers. Maybe Gereon should look that up.

    @kassandro (Mittwoch, 22 August 2012 20:40)

Weiter so!
